    The Department of Nervous Diseases was founded in 1961, the first head of the department was Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Anatoly Yakovlevich Shiyanevsky, who headed the department until 1976. During his work at the department he created a clinic of nervous diseases for adults and children, actively developed the problems of tumor pathology of the nervous system. In 1965 A.Ya. Shiyanevsky defended his doctoral dissertation and was approved as a Professor. Under the guidance of Professor A.Ya. Shiyanevsky a course of pediatric neuropathology was organized as part of the Department of Nervous Diseases, wich was led by Associate Professor A.I. Davydova. During the period of heading the department by Professor A.Ya. Shiyanevsky candidates of medical sciences were trained: A.I. Davydova, A.S. Aleshina, N.A. Yakovlev. The material and educational-methodical base was created to enhance the preparation of students for the development of neuropathology. Laid down by Professor A.Ya. Shiyanevsky, the educational, methodological and research foundation of the department served as the basis for improving the department of nervous diseases.

    From 1977 till 1996 Professor Nikolai Alekseevich Yakovlev was in charge of the Department of Nervous Diseases, in 1988 he defended his doctoral dissertation and was approved as a professor. The main direction of his scientific research was a study of the effects of chromium intoxication on the nervous system. A lot of educational and methodical work was carried out at the department, a number of methodological developments were printed in a typographic way. Under the guidance of the professor, 1 candidate and 1 doctoral dissertation were defended by an employee of the department T.A. Slusar’. By Professor N.A. Yakovlev a base for the training of doctors – reflexologists was created. By prof. N.A. Yakovlev 8 monographs were published.His students are associate professor S.Yu., Suleymanova, assistant D.K. Kuzhakulov. Professor T.A. Slyusar currently head of the Department of Neurology at the Tver Medical Academy (Russia). Assistant of the Department A.A.Dick currently lives and works in Germany.

    From 1996 to 1999 doctor of medical sciences, Professor, honored worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan in science and technology Yuriy Vasilevich Biryuchkov was the head of the united department of neurosurgery, nervous diseases, psychiatry and oriental medicine, Professor Yu.V. Biryuchkov. was one of the leading neurosurgeons in the Union of Independent States and Kazakhstan, founded the school of neurosurgery in the Western region of Kazakhstan. Graduated from postgraduate studies at the Brain Institute of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow. At the Academy of Medical Sciences he defended his candidate and doctoral dissertations, worked in Moscow at the Sklifosovsky clinic, at the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute.     Pupils of Professor Yu.V. Biryuchkov head and successfully work in large neurosurgical centers and departments in Kazakhstan, Russia, Austria, Israel, Greece. So, Professor S.K. Akshulakov since 2009 is the director of the Republican Scientific Center of Neurosurgery in Astana, and earlier for many years headed the Department of Neurosurgery at the Institute for Advanced Training of Doctors in Almaty. In 1990 she graduated with honors from the Aktobe State Medical Institute.      Since January 2019 the Department of Neurology has been conducting research work on the topic: “Determination of the content of pathological proteins in the skin biopsy of patients with neurodegenerative diseases in order to develop an algorithm for differential diagnosis with clinically similar diseases” within the framework of the intra-university grant funding of West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov State Medical University. The clinical bases of the department are the stroke center and the neurological department of the emergency hospital.At the Department of Neurology interns are trained in the specialties “General Medical Practice”. The educational process introduced innovative teaching methods using modern interactive technologies: TBL, CBL, “Lecture for two”.Since 2014 the department has introduced residentsheep in the specialty “Neuropathology, including pediatric”. Today 16 residents of the 1st year of study and 19 residents of the 2nd year of study are studying. Resident graduates are trained for independent work by neurologists to provide specialized care to the adult and child population of the Western region of Kazakhstan: Aktobe, Atyrau, Mangistau, West Kazakhstan and Kyzylorda regions. Resident-neurologists are actively involved in the research work of the department. Residents make oral reports at scientific conferences of various levels with the publication of abstracts.Since 2013 6 masters have been trained in the specialty “Medicine”. The graduates of the department are – masters of medical sciences D.B. Darin, A.A. Khamidulla, A.G.Zinelova, K.S. Begimbaev, A.O. Umurzakova, A.B. Professors O.V. Kolokolov, V.V. Burdakov, L.R. Akhmadeeva, MD, PhD S. Mikhalak, professor Oh De Kwon came with lectures and master classes for students and teaching staff of the department.The staff of the department is actively involved in the implementation of the academic mobility program and travels to conduct lectures and practical classes for students, interns and clinical residents in medical universities in Saratov and Orenburg.     Kostanay, master class (2020)Also, as part of the work of the Association of Neurologists of Western Kazakhstan, training seminars, lectures and master classes are held for neurologists, therapists, general practitioners on topical issues of modern clinical neurology. Since 2019, on the basis of the emergency hospital in Aktobe, the staff of the Department of Neurology has opened the “Office of Multiple Sclerosis”, where patients with demyelinating diseases of the nervous system of Aktobe and the Western region of Kazakhstan are admitted.During the Covid – 19 pandemic the staff of the department provided assistance to practical health care, conducted consultations, master classes and training seminars. Residents – neurologists worked in provisional hospitals of Aktobe, Aktau, Atyrau.
