West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov Medical UnversityThe Department of Nervous Diseases was founded in 1961, the first head of the department was Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Anatoly Yakovlevich Shiyanevsky, who headed the department until 1976. During his work at the department he created a clinic of nervous diseases for adults and children, actively developed the problems of tumor pathology of the nervous system. In 1965 A.Ya. Shiyanevsky defended his doctoral dissertation and was approved as a Professor. Under the guidance of Professor A.Ya. Shiyanevsky a course of pediatric neuropathology was organized as part of the Department of Nervous Diseases, wich was led by Associate Professor A.I. Davydova. During the period of heading the department by Professor A.Ya. Shiyanevsky candidates of medical sciences were trained: A.I. Davydova, A.S. Aleshina, N.A. Yakovlev. The material and educational-methodical base was created to enhance the preparation of students for the development of neuropathology. Laid down by Professor A.Ya. Shiyanevsky, the educational, methodological and research foundation of the department served as the basis for improving the department of nervous diseases.
From 1977 till 1996 Professor Nikolai Alekseevich Yakovlev was in charge of the Department of Nervous Diseases, in 1988 he defended his doctoral dissertation and was approved as a professor. The main direction of his scientific research was a study of the effects of chromium intoxication on the nervous system. A lot of educational and methodical work was carried out at the department, a number of methodological developments were printed in a typographic way. Under the guidance of the professor, 1 candidate and 1 doctoral dissertation were defended by an employee of the department T.A. Slusar’. By Professor N.A. Yakovlev a base for the training of doctors – reflexologists was created. By prof. N.A. Yakovlev 8 monographs were published.His students are associate professor S.Yu., Suleymanova, assistant D.K. Kuzhakulov. Professor T.A. Slyusar currently head of the Department of Neurology at the Tver Medical Academy (Russia). Assistant of the Department A.A.Dick currently lives and works in Germany.
From 1996 to 1999 doctor of medical sciences, Professor, honored worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan in science and technology Yuriy Vasilevich Biryuchkov was the head of the united department of neurosurgery, nervous diseases, psychiatry and oriental medicine, Professor Yu.V. Biryuchkov. was one of the leading neurosurgeons in the Union of Independent States and Kazakhstan, founded the school of neurosurgery in the Western region of Kazakhstan. Graduated from postgraduate studies at the Brain Institute of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow. At the Academy of Medical Sciences he defended his candidate and doctoral dissertations, worked in Moscow at the Sklifosovsky clinic, at the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute. He began his career at the Aktobe Medical Institute in 1965, from 1976 to 1986 he was the vice-rector for scientific work. Together with the staff of the department and clinic, he introduced into practical health care more than 50 new therapeutic and diagnostic methods, including such as discography, myelography, venospondylography, angiography and he is also the author of numerous innovative techniques to improve neurosurgical interventions. Author of 19 rational proposals, inventions and patents.
Pupils of Professor Yu.V. Biryuchkov head and successfully work in large neurosurgical centers and departments in Kazakhstan, Russia, Austria, Israel, Greece. So, Professor S.K. Akshulakov since 2009 is the director of the Republican Scientific Center of Neurosurgery in Astana, and earlier for many years headed the Department of Neurosurgery at the Institute for Advanced Training of Doctors in Almaty. Under the guidance of Professor Yu.V. Biryuchkov more than 20 candidate and 3 doctoral dissertations were defended, including the doctoral dissertation of M.Yu. Biryuchkov.
From 1999 to 2008 Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor Aigul Zholdasovna Konysova was in charge of the course of nervous diseases at West Kazakhstan medical University. In 1990 she graduated with honors from the Aktobe State Medical Institute. In 1991-1992 was in the clinical intern of the Research Institute of Neurology of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Moscow, where in 1995 she defended her thesis in the specialty 14.00.13 – nervous diseases on the topic: “Serotonin metabolism in multiple sclerosis and retrobulbar neuritis” under the guidance of Professor I.A. Zavalishin. A.Zh. Konysova is the author of over 40 scientific works published in our republic and abroad.
In the period from 2008 to 2011 candidate of medical sciences, associate professor Svetlana Yurievna Suleimanova was in charge of the course of nervous diseases. She graduated in 1988 with honors from the Aktobe State Medical Institute. From 1988 to 1989 studied in an internship in neurology. 1989 to 1991 – Clinical resident of the Department of Nervous Diseases. In 1996 she defended her candidate thesis on the topic: “Compensatory-adaptive mechanisms in case of damage to the frontal lobes of the brain (clinical and experimental research)”, specialty 14.00.13 – nervous diseases under the guidance of Professor S.K. Kayshibaev. Since 1995 she has been working at the Department of Nervous Diseases of the West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov State Medical University. Author of more than 50 articles, 4 guidelines, 1 methodological guide.
Kashkinbaeva Alima Robertovna worked as an assistant at the Department of Neurology from 2003 to 2013. Іn 1997 she graduated from the Aktobe State Medical Institute. From 1997 to 2000 was in graduate school at the Department of Nervous Diseases of the Aktobe State Medical Institute. In 2001 she defended her candidate thesis on the topic: “Compensatory-adaptive mechanisms in case of damage to the occipital lobes of the brain (clinical and experimental research)”, specialty 14.00.13 – nervous diseases under the guidance of Professor Yu.V. Biryuchkov, Professor S.K. Kayshibaev. She is the author of 15 scientific publications.
Amangeldy Kadirbaevich Nurkeev 1994 to 2011 worked at the Department of Neurology as an assistant and in subsequent years as an associate professor. 2000 to 2008 he was a freelance neurologist of the Health Department of the Aktobe region. She is the author of 12 articles.
Assistant of the department Darin Dauren Bakuzakovich, Master of Medical Sciences. From 2013 to 2018 he worked as an assistant at the Department of Neurology. In 2015 he defended his Ph.D. thesis on “Clinical efficacy of thrombolytic therapy in the acute phase of ischemic stroke” under the guidance of Associate Professor S.Yu. Suleimanova. in the specialty “Medicine”.
The head of the Department of Neurology, candidate of medical Sciences Utepkalieva Aigul Pazylbekovna, has been working at the department since 2007. A. P. Utepkalieva graduated from the Aktobe State Medical Institute in 1995, and in subsequent years worked as a neurologist in practical health care. From 1998 to 2000 she studied in a clinical residentsheep at the Department of Nervous Diseases. Since 2007 – assistant of the Department of Neurology of the Faculty of Advanced Medical Training. In May 2010, she defended her candidate thesis on the topic: “The clinic of neurological manifestations and the state of oxidative metabolism in the population living in environmental conditions in the region of oil and gas fields of the Aktobe region”, specialty 14.00.13 – nervous diseases. Scientific supervisor – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Gulnar Bayanovna Kabdrakhmanova. She is the author of more than 40 printed works. In 2011, she received the author’s certificate of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the topic: “Method for correcting disorders of the nervous system” (No.2009/0270. 1 of 02.02.09). From 2010 to 2017 she worked as an associate professor of the Department. In 2011, she was a freelance neurologist at the Department of Health of the Aktobe region. Since 2017 works as a Head of the Neurology Department.
From 2011 to 2017 the head of the Department of Neurology was Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Gulnar Bayanovna Kabdrakhmanova. In the period from 2004 to 2011 she was the head of the Department of Neurology of the Faculty of additional medical and Pharmaceutical Education.After graduating from the Medical Faculty of the Semipalatinsk State Medical Institute in 1982, Gulnar Bayanovna Kabdrakhmanova worked as a practical doctor in Pavlodar, Karaganda city.Since 1996 she worked as an Assistant, later as an associate professor of the Department of Nervous Diseases of the Karaganda State Medical Institute. In 1998, she defended her candidate thesis on the topic: “Acute toxic encephalopathy caused by psychotropic drugs and alcohol” in the specialty 14.00.13-nervous diseases. From 2000 to 2002 she was a doctoral student at the Department of Nervous Diseases of the S. D. Asfendiyarov KazNMU. In 2003, she defended her doctoral dissertation on the topic: “Clinic and pathogenetic mechanisms of neurological manifestations of opium addiction”, specialty 14.00.13-nervous diseases.Since 2004, he has been working at the West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov State Medical University. From April 2007 to April 2008, she worked as the Vice-Rector for Scientific and Clinical Work of the West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov State Medical University.

I.Guz’ on the topic: “The effect of oil phytoextracts on lipid peroxidation and the antioxidant system in patients with toxic encephalopathy caused by a surrogate manganese-containing psychostimulant” (2007); G. M.Sadykova on the topic “The effect of burdock root extract on the parameters of POL-AOS in patients with dyscirculatory encephalopathy” (2010); A. P. Ermagambetova on the topic: “The clinic of neurological manifestations and the state of oxidative metabolism in the population living in environmental conditions in the region of oil and gas fields of the Aktobe region” (2010).Professor G. B.Kabdrakhmanova is the author of more than 100 printed works, including the monograph “Damage to the nervous system in opium addiction” (2002).From 2006 to 2010 she was a freelance neurologist at the Department of Health of the Aktobe region. From 2005 to the present – Chairman of the Society of Neurologists of the Aktobe region. On her initiative in 2007 a neurovascular department was organized on the basis of the Emergency Hospital.
Professor G. B.Kabdrakhmanova with medical cadedoctors at the patient’s bedsideIn September 2010 under the leadership of Professor G. B. Kabdrakhmanova an innovative method of treatment of ischemic stroke – thrombolytic therapy based on the Emergency Hospital in Aktobe was introduced for the first time in Kazakhstan.At the initiative of Prof. G. B.Kabdrakhmanova in January 2017 the Association of Neurologists of West Kazakhstan was organized and officially registered. The Chairman of the Association was Professor G.B. Kabdrakhmanova. In June 2017 the members of the Association joined the Kazakhstan National Association of Neurologists “Neuroscience” and the World Stroke Organization (WSO). Since 2019 Prof. G. B.Kabdrakhmanova has been a member of the thematic working group on conducting and developing proposals for the development of the draft State Program for the Development of Healthcare for 2020 – 2025.Acting Associate Professor of the Department – Alima Abayevna Khamidulla, PhD. In 2015 she defended her master’s thesis on the topic: “Clinical effectiveness of immunomodulatory therapy in patients with multiple sclerosis in Aktobe”. In June 2019 she defended her dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) on the topic: “Clinical and immunological characteristics of multiple sclerosis” under the supervision of Professor G. B.Kabdrakhmanova, Associate Professor A. P.Utepkalieva and Professor of the Poznan University of Medical Sciences (Poland) S. Michalak. She is the author of more than 20 printed works.Assistant of the Department Zhanylsyn Orynbasarovna Urasheva graduated from the Department of neurology West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov State Medical University residentsheep in the specialty ” Neuropathology, including pediatric” in 2017 She has been working as an assistant since October 2017. She is the author of more than 10 printed works.Aigerim Berkinovna Utegenova – PhD candidate at the Department of Neurology. From 2016 to 2018 studied at the master’s degree in the specialty “Medicine”. She defended her master’s thesis on the topic: “Clinical characteristics of cognitive impairment in the acute period of ischemic stroke” under the guidance of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor G.B. Kabdrakhmanova. Currently studying for PhD. Thesis topic is “Immunohistochemical markers in the diagnosis of degenerative diseases of the nervous system” under the guidance of of Candidate of Medical Sciences A.P. Utepkalieva and Professor of the Poznan University of Medical Sciences (Poland) S. Michalak. She is the author of over 15 publications.
Since January 2019 the Department of Neurology has been conducting research work on the topic: “Determination of the content of pathological proteins in the skin biopsy of patients with neurodegenerative diseases in order to develop an algorithm for differential diagnosis with clinically similar diseases” within the framework of the intra-university grant funding of West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov State Medical University. The clinical bases of the department are the stroke center and the neurological department of the emergency hospital.At the Department of Neurology interns are trained in the specialties “General Medical Practice”. The educational process introduced innovative teaching methods using modern interactive technologies: TBL, CBL, “Lecture for two”.Since 2014 the department has introduced residentsheep in the specialty “Neuropathology, including pediatric”. Today 16 residents of the 1st year of study and 19 residents of the 2nd year of study are studying. Resident graduates are trained for independent work by neurologists to provide specialized care to the adult and child population of the Western region of Kazakhstan: Aktobe, Atyrau, Mangistau, West Kazakhstan and Kyzylorda regions. Resident-neurologists are actively involved in the research work of the department. Residents make oral reports at scientific conferences of various levels with the publication of abstracts.Since 2013 6 masters have been trained in the specialty “Medicine”. The graduates of the department are – masters of medical sciences D.B. Darin, A.A. Khamidulla, A.G.Zinelova, K.S. Begimbaev, A.O. Umurzakova, A.B. Utegenova who are currently working at the West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov State Medical University and leading medical institutions of Aktobe. Also, the department annually conducts retraining cycles for doctors: primary specialization “Neuropathology, including pediatric”, training courses on topical issues of modern clinical neurology.The main scientific directions of the department’s work are the problem of vascular pathology of the brain, demyelinating, degenerative diseases of the nervous system.The staff of the department takes an active part in international conferences in Kazakhstan, countries of near and far abroad (Latvia,Russia, Azerbaijan, Poland, Turkey).
The Department of Neurology actively cooperates with colleagues from the Saratov State Medical University, Bashkir State Medical University, Orenburg State Medical University (Russia), Poznan University of Medical Sciences (Poland), School of Medicine of the Catholic University of Daegu (South Korea). Professors O.V. Kolokolov, V.V. Burdakov, L.R. Akhmadeeva, MD, PhD S. Mikhalak, professor Oh De Kwon came with lectures and master classes for students and teaching staff of the department.The staff of the department is actively involved in the implementation of the academic mobility program and travels to conduct lectures and practical classes for students, interns and clinical residents in medical universities in Saratov and Orenburg. Along with the traditional forms of teaching innovative methods of conducting lectures and classes are used: “lecture for two”, “TBL”, “CBL”.
The clinical work of the staff of the Department of Neurology consists of weekly rounds in the stroke and neurological departments of the emergency hospital, consulting work in non-core departments at clinical bases, participation in consultations, reviewing medical records. As part of the provision of advisory and methodological assistance to practical health care, consultations are carried out with visits to medical institutions of West Kazakhstan, Atyrau, Mangystau regions.
Kostanay, master class (2020)Also, as part of the work of the Association of Neurologists of Western Kazakhstan, training seminars, lectures and master classes are held for neurologists, therapists, general practitioners on topical issues of modern clinical neurology. Since 2019, on the basis of the emergency hospital in Aktobe, the staff of the Department of Neurology has opened the “Office of Multiple Sclerosis”, where patients with demyelinating diseases of the nervous system of Aktobe and the Western region of Kazakhstan are admitted.During the Covid – 19 pandemic the staff of the department provided assistance to practical health care, conducted consultations, master classes and training seminars. Residents – neurologists worked in provisional hospitals of Aktobe, Aktau, Atyrau.
